Air Traffic Management (ATM) in UAM is important for safe and smooth coordination of eVTOLs operating in public and restricted airspaces
For air traffic navigation and collision management, most ATM systems (especially density-based ones) include 3D terrain, static/dynamic obstacle mapping and weather information
To facilitate safe and smooth traffic management, a safety bubble is ascribed to every drone. This identifies the safe, risky, and collision-certain distances between the drone and other drones
Existing Projects of Interest
- DLR City-ATM - An air traffic management system for eVTOLs by DLR Aerospace. In this system, a 4D (3D + time) trajectory of drones is shown. The objective is to enable BVLOS flight and implement Conflict Detection and Avoidance. D2X (Drone to Everything) communication is achieved here
- Map2Fly - A live map that marks areas based on airspace and geofencing restrictions
Limitations
- Only nominal urban operations are allowed
- Only Visual Flight Rules (VFR)
- No regulatory frameworks
