Cognitive Load Theory
Cognitive load is the amount of working memory resources the brain uses for a task
Schemas are important in CLT → Lack of the right schemas leads to hitting the cognitive load limit quicker. I see a connection between CLT and machine learning — decision tree
The brain’s working memory and processing power are two important cognitive resources that directly impact learning. However, they are limited resources at the end of the day and cognitive load is experienced when we're juggling between the two. We experience burnout when we have exhausted our cognitive resources
- Working memory is limited (~4 items in 20 seconds)
- Working memory is multimodal ← good for reducing cognitive load
The extent or complexity of cognitive load can be described by element interactivity. In the working memory, several logically related elements are simultaneously handled. When more of this happens, the brain experiences increased cognitive load, resulting in the dropping of some elements. The higher the element interactivity, the higher the intrinsic and extraneous cognitive load
