Epistemic Review

Learned Helplessness is when repeated averse stimuli affects the ability of a person to make decisions

When you’re presented with numerous stressful situations, there may come a point where you no longer feel motivated to even try or notice opportunities that may help you alter your circumstances

  • When a parent does for a child what the child can easily do themselves, this causes the child to believe that they can’t do it
  • When you see others succeed and achieve something, you feel your confidence and self-esteem getting shot even if your situation is different. This leads to you withdrawing from future endeavours

Dr. Martin Seligman is credited for early experiments to demonstrate learned helplessness
