Lunar Exploration Ground Sites (LEGS) are ground antennas being built by NASA to support the Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) project’s Near Space Network and ==Deep Space Network
Specification | Details |
---|---|
Total number of LEGS | 6 (3 currently being planned) |
Locations | Australia, South Africa, New Mexico |
Diameter | 66 feet |
Strategic antenna placement
The LEGS are placed in such a way that when the moon sets on one region, the other regions will be able to see the moon due to timezone differences. This allows for continuous observations
The intention is to
- Offload some network load from the Deep Space Network
- Capture signals from satellites and convert them into data with minimal losses
